1. Who can run for Clear Hills County Council?
To run for Council, you must be:

  • At least 18 years of age,
  • A Canadian citizen,
  • A resident of Clear Hills County for at least six consecutive months prior to Nomination Day,
  • Eligible to vote in the election.

2. What are the duties of a Councillor?
Councillors are responsible for making decisions that affect the community, including:

  • Setting policies and bylaws,
  • Approving the municipal budget,
  • Representing the interests of residents,
  • Attending Council and committee meetings.

3. How much time is required to serve as a Councillor?
Council members attend regular Council meetings, committee meetings, and various events. On average, the commitment can range from 20 to 30 hours per week, depending on the responsibilities of the Councillor and the issues being addressed.

Regular Council Meetings: Held twice a month from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Policy & Priority Meetings: Scheduled once a month, also from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

External Committee Meetings: between 1 - 5 meeting per month.

Weekend Meetings: Occasional external committee meetings may take place.

Meeting Preparation: Requires 3-6 hours per week, depending on the agendas.

Minimum Average Weekly Time Commitment: 20-30 hours.

Note: Elected Council Members will have additional commitments immediately following their election. These include the Organizational Meeting, orientation, governance training, and attendance at various conferences, in addition to regular Council and Committee meetings.

4. Are Councillors paid for their time?
Yes, Councillors receive an honorarium and are reimbursed for expenses related to their duties. The compensation is intended to cover time spent at meetings, travel, and other official functions.

5. What is the term length for a Councillor?
Councillors are elected for a four-year term. After four years, they may run for re-election if they choose.

6. How do I file my nomination to run for Council?
To file your nomination, you must:

  • Complete a Nomination Paper and Candidate’s Acceptance Form,
  • Gather the required number of signatures from eligible electors in the County (specific requirements may vary),
  • Submit your nomination form to the County Office before the deadline on Nomination Day.

7. What kind of campaign can I run?
Candidates may campaign by meeting with residents, distributing brochures, using social media, and attending public forums. It’s important to follow all election rules and regulations, including those regarding campaign contributions and expenses.

No, employees of Clear Hills County are ineligible to run for Council unless they resign from their position before filing their nomination.

11. What support does the County provide to new Councillors?

Council makes decisions based on majority votes during Council meetings. All Councillors have the opportunity to participate in discussions before votes are cast.

14. What happens if I’m elected but can’t fulfill my term?

15. Is there travel involved?
Yes you will be required to travel to and from Regular Council meetings as well as to external and internal committee meetings and conferences. You will be required to track the km and will be compensated by means of km (distance) based on the current km rate.
